Marshmallow lends its name to the modern candy because ancient Egyptians used it to flavor a sweet confection. Traditionally used to soothe sore throats and inflammations of the mucous membranes, it comes from the Greek word "to heal". Marshmallow leaf has become popular in smoking blends as well.
